As promised, this week we are revealing the results of last week's Contests Week challenges.

Tuesday's challenge was to write a haiku - a form of three-line syllabic poetry - including two out of three set words (smoke, lake, paper).

We received over 100 entries to this contest, the large number being partly due to the fact that members were allowed to submit up to three entries. Again, the standard was very high and the voting close. The winner, however, was rohishetty with the following beautifully crafted entry:

Haiku: an ink-clad
thought on paper; lovely like
the lake at sunrise.

I will be in touch with rohishetty to arrange delivery of his/her prize, a copy of WCCL's Writer's Block CD.

There were four runners-up in this contest, all of which came within a single vote of the winner. Their authors should all consider themselves Highly Commended, therefore. Here are the entries concerned:

Dear John

Ripples on the lake
As tears fall on the paper:
‘I am leaving you.’

by midnight candle

Ashes in the lake
Seen like smudges on paper
Only smoke remains.

by sue91353

fall’s golden paper-
the deer’s breath like puffs of smoke
sharp crack splits the air

by Nightwind

Her cigarette smoke
clouds my mind; the lake reflects
a turbulent sky.

by rohishetty

You may notice that our winner, rohishetty, had one of the runner-up entries as well, so double congratulations to him/her! Incidentally, rohishetty is a new member and has not yet made any posts on the forum, so we hope to hear more from him/her soon!

Congratulations again to our winner and runners-up, and thank you to everyone else who entered. For those who are interested, I have attached a separate Word file including all the entries. The entries are listed anonymously, but feel free to identify yourself if you wish.

The results of Wednesday's challenge will be published here tomorrow.

rohishetty, I hope you'll come out into the open now and accept all the praise due you.

This was one of the most difficult challenges to judge, not only due to the number of entries, but due to the quality of the writing. So congrats to everyone who entered.

Smiles,
Alice

Congratulations to the winner and runners up

And WOW to all the contributors. I had checks all over my papers trying to get this down to just the few I could vote for. Very creative submissions.
